Baldwin also had a vision for the community that would spring up around his quarry. He wanted Berea to be a place where people of all ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds could live and work together in harmony. To that end, he sold land in the area at a reduced price to any person of any race who agreed to live in Berea and work in the quarry or in a related industry.

As a result, Berea became one of the first racially integrated communities in the United States. This legacy of inclusivity and diversity continues to this day, as Berea is known for its welcoming and accepting community.

In addition to the sandstone industry, Berea also has a rich educational history. Baldwin College, founded in 1845 by John Baldwin and other members of the community, was originally established as a missionary school with the goal of educating and uplifting the local population. In 1913, Baldwin College merged with Wallace College to become Baldwin-Wallace College (now Baldwin Wallace University), and the new institution continued to serve the educational needs of the community.  Ever since, Baldwin- Wallace University has been a bedrock (pun intended) of the city, brining in students from all over the world and educating them with a high degree of professionalism.

Interestingly enough, before Berea High School and Midpark High School merged into one school (now Berea-Midpark High School), the football teams used to play against each other every year for the bragging rights of winning the Grindstone, a reference to John Baldwin and the history of this great city that is Berea, Ohio.
