The city of Berea, Ohio, located in Cuyahoga County, was founded in 1836 by John Baldwin, who discovered a rich deposit of high-quality sandstone in the area. According to legend, Baldwin was standing in the Rocky River one day, after having been through some life hardships, and stood there, crying out to God, asking for direction for his life.  It was at that moment that his foot caught a stone in the river, sandstone, and Baldwin then was imparted with the idea to use sandstone to form grindstones. According to the Berea Historical Society (2022), Baldwin saw the potential for this resource to be used in the construction industry and began quarrying the sandstone, which quickly became a major industry in the area.
